Studying the Milk of Mothers with Gestational Diabetes – Join Our Research Project!

Human milk is a unique food that not only provides infants with all the essential nutrients they need, but also contains hormones, antibodies, and numerous other bioactive compounds that support the development of the brain, immune system, and metabolism.

We know that breastfeeding may reduce the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes in children later in life. However, many questions remain unanswered regarding the composition of breast milk in women who experienced gestational diabetes during pregnancy.

At the Department of Medical Biology, we are conducting a research study to investigate whether gestational diabetes affects the composition of human milk. We are analyzing the content of nutrients, selected fatty acids, and hormones involved in metabolic regulation, including insulin, ghrelin, leptin, and adiponectin. The results of this project will help us better understand the nutritional needs of infants born to mothers with gestational diabetes and provide valuable information for physicians, midwives, and lactation consultants.

We invite mothers from Warsaw and the surrounding area who were diagnosed with gestational diabetes during pregnancy and are currently exclusively breastfeeding their infants to participate in the study. Eligible participants are mothers between the 8th and 11th week of lactation. Every participant makes an important contribution to scientific knowledge that may benefit future mothers and their children.
